Surgical management of 140 cases of vitiligo on special body sites

Abstract:

Objective To investigate available surgical strategies for the management of vitiligo on special body sites, so as to improve treatment outcome of vitiligo. Methods In total, 140 patients with vitiligo on special body sites collected from 1998 to 2008 were included in this study. Different surgical strategies and postoperative managements were performed according to lesional sites, which mainly included removal of scalp lesions, transfer of flaps, hair transplant, dermabrasion, suturing and adhesion of tissues, tie-over dressing, etc. Results After treatment with appropriate surgical strategies and postoperative management, the effective rate was 94.3% (21/35) for lesions in the beard and eyebrow area, 100% (70/70) for those on the scalp, neck, eyes, periorbital area, hands and lip mucosa, and the total effective rate amounted to 98.6%. Conclusion The cure rates of vitiligo on special body sites are obviously improved by using different surgical strategies and dispositions.
