Onychomadesis following hand, foot and mouth disease: clinical analysis of nine cases

Department of Dermatology, People's Hospital of Shenzhen, Second Clinical College of Jinan University, Shenzhen 518020, China Corresponding author: Fang Sining, Email: catherine2005@163.com 【Abstract】 Objective To investigate the clinical features of onychomadesis following hand, foot and mouth disease(HFMD). Methods A retrospective analysis was carried out on nine cases of onychomadesis following HFMD collected at the Department of Dermatology, Shenzhen People's Hospital from October 2012 to November 2012. Results The age of patients varied from 22 months to 10 years. All the patients had fever and were diagnosed with HFMD in 3 - 8 weeks before the onset of onychomadesis. On average, 7.3 finger nails and 3.2 toe nails were affected in each patient. Conclusions Onychomadesis may be a temporary nail damage secondary to HFMD, which is likely to be caused by some special types of virus.
