Abstract: A strain of Prototheca zopfii was isolated from the facial lesion of a 13 year-old girl who came from rural area of Huaibei,Anhui Province in 1992.A series of tests were performed on the isolate. The results showed that it may form smooth creamy colony on solid medium and its growth was inhibited by cycloheximide.Assimilation tests demonstrated that dextrose, galactose, glycerol and propanol were assimilated.Biopsy of skin lesion showed that there are large yeast-like spores within giant cells and also scattered in superficial dermis.Based on the above characteristics, this strain of fungus was identified as Prototheca zopfii.
