Mohs micrographic surgery: a retrospective study of 75 cases

Abstract: Objective To analyze the significance and characteristics of Mohs micrographic surgery, and to provide instances for development of Mohs micrographic surgery in China.Methods A retrospective study was performed on 75 cases managed with Mohs micrographic surgery.Results Aged patients predominated in this study.Basal cell carcinoma and Bowen disease were the most common diseases.To achieve a thorough removal of tumors, some patients experienced several times of resection during the course of Mohs micrographic surgery, and the resultant defects were larger than those treated by routine operations.Of the 75 cases underwent the operation, 68% were performed on the head or face, and the defects here usually needed to be repaired by complex plastic surgery.The size of final defects was unrelated to the age of patients or location of tumors.Conclusions Compared with the traditional approach of operation, Mohs micrographic surgery could increase the cure rates of skin tumors, and do benefit the reconstruction of defects followine resection.
