Results of Field Trial of POD and Rehabilitation in Leprosy

Abstract: Objective To study the feasibility and reslt of the implemenLation of Prevention of Disability(POD)and rehabilitation of leprosy in the fields.Methods According to the national erileria and principles on leprosy ease selection.27 959 eases or cured patients in 14 pilot areas were seleeed for the tbllowing projects:early detection and traitfing(10500).prevention and treatment of peripheral neuritis(1407) provision and follow-up of protective footwears(8200)and prosthesis(613), comprehensive therapy of complieated ulcers(1804)and reconstructive surgery(269).Results Nerve function improved or recovered in most of eases(166)out of 193 eases in those treated with corticosteroids.Out of the 10500 disabled affeeted hv leprosy receiving self-care training, 6743 eases were proficient in self-care and their sceondary impairments ineludiag deers, cracks, vision loss, etc.reduced or markedly improved.heers healed in I055 eases out of 1804 with complicated ulcers.The function anti appearance got improvement very much in the cured patients who got prosthesis and reconstructive surger.Conclusion it is feasible to implement POD and rehabihtation project field conditions, and is worthy to be popularized.
