Abstract: Objective To evaluate the onset rules, predilection sites, common relapse sites and surgical outcomes of basal cell carcinoma (BCC).Methods A retrospective study was performed of 162 patients with basal cell carcinoma admitted to Institute of Dermatology,Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & amp;Peking Union Medical College between 1987 and 2005.Results Of the 162 patients with basal cell carcinoma,119 (73.5%) were older than 50 years,156 (96%) had a solitary lesion. The most frequently affected sites,in descending order, were the cheek, nose, scalp, trunk, perioral, and eyelids.During the 1-3 year follow-up period, local recurrence occurred in 13 (6.3%) patients. The recurrence sites included nose (n=7),perioral (n=4),eyelids (n=1),and scalp (n=1).Conclusions Surgical treatment is a highly effective treatment for basal cell carcinoma and should continue to be the treatment of choice in most cases. No significant correlation was observed between operation strategies and prognosis.
