Methods Eighty patients with chronic eczema, including 46 males and 34 females, were recruited in this study. A self-controlled study was performed. Lesions on one body side of the patients (experiment side) were topically treated with a skin care product containing Prinsepia utilis Royle and purslane in combination with mometasone furoate cream once daily, and those on the other body side (control side) treated with mometasone furoate cream alone once daily. Mometasone furoate cream was applied for one week in both sides, and the skin care product for 60 days in the experiment side. Patients visited the hospital on day 0, 7, 30 and 60 after the beginning of treatment. Skin barrier function was evaluated by skin sebum content, stratum corneum hydration and transepidermal water loss (TEWL). The improvement of signs and symptoms was estimated in patients at the end of the treatment (on day 60). Results At the end of the 60-day treatment, the experiment side showed significantly higher response rate but lower recurrence rate compared with the control side (all P < 0.01). Moreover, skin sebum content and stratum corneum hydration significantly increased, but TEWL value statistically decreased in the experiment side on day 7, 30 and 60 compared with those in the same side on day 0 as well as those in the control side at these same time points (all P < 0.01). After the start of treatment, skin sebum content, stratum corneum hydration and TEWL value gradually restored to the normal levels over time in the experiment side. Conclusion The skin care product containing Prinsepia utilis Royle and purslane can effectively restore skin barrier function in, and decrease the recurrence of, eczema.
