Abstract: Macrophages constitute a major subpopulation of cells in the human dermis. Yingjun GUO, Yuming ZHAO, Yakun WANG, Hong-Duo CHEN, Department of Dermatology, the first Hospital of China Medical University, Shenyang 110001,China [Abstract] Objective To observe the percent of macrophages and dendritic cells in normal adult human dermis. Methods Normal skin from 6 locations including the face, trunk, proximal limbs, distal limbs, and palms and soles of 8 subjects were included in the study. The epidermal sheets, horizontal and longitudinal sections of the skin were stained with an ABC immunoperoxidase procedure with anti–CD68,CD36 monoclonal and anti-FXIIIa polyclonal antibodies. Results The percent of CD68 positive cells were 67.5±17.1% within the superficial dermis, FXIIIa were 35.2±14.5%, CD36 were 27.0±11.4%.Conclusion: Macrophages are the main cells within the normal human dermis with immune defense functions. There are also significant numbers of dermal dendritic cells within the normal dermis.
