Abstract: Objective To investigate the mRNA expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in skin tissue of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and normal skin tissue, and the relationship between the expression of COX-2 and VEGF.Methods The rnRNA expression of COX-2 and VEGF was measured by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR) in skin specimens from 24 cases of SCC and 10 normal controls. Results The mRNA expression of COX-2 was higher in SCC specimens than in control skin (0.56±0.48 vs.0.01±0.01,P<0.05).The mRNA expression of VEGF was significantly higher in SCC specimens than in normal skin tissue (0.66±0.35 vs 0.02±0.01,P<0.05).And the expression of COX-2 was associated (γ=0.864) with the expression of VEGF.Conclusion COX-2 may be related to the angiogenesis in SCC,and likely to play its role by up-regulation of VEGF expression.
