Abstract: Objective To compare the intensity and isotype of anticardiolipin(ACL)antibodies in the sera from patients with syphilis and SLE.Methods IgG and IgM type of ACL antibodies were examined by ELISA in 99 syphilis patients and 75SLE patients. Results Although similar positive percentage of IgG ACL antibodies was shown in syphilis and SLE patients, stronger absorbance(A value)was seen in syphilis patients(P<0.001).Higher positivity rate of IgM ACL antibodies was shown in syphilis than in SLE(61.62%vs18.67%)(P<0.001),and that with stronger intensity of reaction(P<0.05).Conclusion The different reaction intensity and the different positivity rates of different isotypes might be a reflection of the difference in the mechanism of antibody production and functional activities of these antibodies in SLE and syphilis.
