Abstract: Objective To established an animal model for studying the hair cycle. Methods Using C57BL6 mice as animal model, hair shafts of 25 mice were depilated by wax/resin mixture to induce the hair follicles from telogen to anagen. Skin color and histological changes were observed daily. Results After depilation, the skin color of those mice turned from pink (telogen) to black (anagen) in day 5~6 and turned from gray (catagen) to pink (telogen) in day 17~19. Histologically, anagen (substage IV) took place in day 5~6, changed to catagen in day 17~19, and entered telogen in day 20 after depilation. It showed that depilation by wax/resin mixture could induce C57BL6 mice from telogen to highly synchronized hair growth cycle. The changes of skin color were consistent with the histological changes of hair cycle. Conclusion C57BL6 mice could be used as an animal model for further studies on hair cycle.
