First Case of Phaeohyphomycosis Caused by Chaetomium Murorum in China

Abstract: A 25-year-old female farmer with phaeohyphomycosis caused by Chaetomium murorum was found in Zhao Xian of Hebei Province in December, 1991.She complained of the dark-red and brownish red plaques on the chest and abdomen region, low fever and emaciation for over one year.Histological findings of skin biopsy specimen from the chest showed that the fungi with brownish cell wall, transparent cytoplasm,and septate hyphae scattered in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue.The fungi grew well on SDA medium at 25℃ and 35℃.The perithecia were observed on PDA medium at room temperature after two months.Based on the morphologic features of perithecium, parietal seta and ascospore, this strain of fungus was identified as Chaetomium murorum.
