Abstract: Sebum Excretion Rate(SER) measured by direct gravimctric method and Propionibacterium Acncs Counts(PAC) by detergent scrub technique were studied nn the forehead in twelve patients with inflammatory acne vulgaris and in twelve age and sex matched control subjects. It was found that all patients with acne had higher SER than those of control subjects and the clinical severity of acne was directly correlated to the SERAlthough the PAC in acne group(geometric mean 44668CFU/cm2 was also noted to be higher than those of the control group(gevmetric mean 1622CFU/cm2),the correlation between PAG and the scverity of acne was not obtained. These results suggest That a higher schum production is one of the inzportant factors in the pathagcnesis of acne, but Pro-pionibacterium acnes may only be one of the indirect factors troth in the pathogencsis of acne and in the mediation of inflammation.
