Abstract: A comparison of manifestations and severity of SLE in 60 male patients and female controls was studied. The results showed that the manifestations and the severity of SLE tended to be similar between the two groups, but discoid lesions and neuropsychiatric involvement were more common in the males. Serum sex hormone profiles were performed on 20 of the above 60 male patients and 20 age-matched healthy male volunteers. The profile consisted of estradiol (E2), testosterone (T), progesterone, follicular stimulating hormone, luteiaizing hormone, and prolactin. An increase in serum EQ, decrease in serum T and marked increase in ratio of E2 to T. E2 values and E2/T ratio in the males correlated sienificantlv with severitv of the disease.
