Abstract:

The first case of systemic phaeohyphomycosis caused by Exophiala spinifera was found in Pingyin County, Shandong Province, China in 1384. The patient was a 9-year-old male complaining of 1-year history of extensive black plaques with itching on his skin. Roent-genograms showed multiple cystic degeneration and pathologic fracture of the bones of upper and lower extremities. Fungi culture revealed positive results from the samples of blood, stool, cutaneous lesions, and the biopsy of lymph node. The pathogenic species of fungi was Exophiala spinifera identified by the culture and SEM.
