Abstract: In the paper, 40 cases of sporotrichosis were observed clinically and histopathologically. The authors emphasized that the direct examinations of the PAS-stained smears of pus or tissue fluid from the lesions were of help in diagnosis. Round, ovate forms or budding spores (instead of "cigar-form" spores) were found in all nine cases examined. Histopatholo-gically, four kinds of changes were recognized. Mixed-cell and purulent granulomatous inflammation were seen most commonly, while the so-called "three zones" occurred only in two cases. 32 of 40 cases were positive in PAS-stained tissue sections after careful examination of spores. Besides, PAS-positive granules or debris were found in the slides of some cases which were supposed to be the fragments of the spores after EM observation of two cases.
