Abstract: Egidermal Langerhans cells(LCs)from sin patients with scabies were studied with both ATPase staining, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The densitp of LCs was found to have decreased markedly and their distribution showed local aggregations in four cases. The dendrites of maap LCs looked shorter in length, decreased in number or totally disappeared. The shape of Birbeck granule was abnormal is two of the three cases observed with TEM. But in the other case, its number was increased. It is thought that LCs may play an important role in the immunopathology of scabies.
