Since 1970, 69 patients with severe SLE had been admitted and treated in our hospital:20 cases (2 viales, 18 females)were found to be associated with neuropsychiatric disturlaace. The interval between onset of SLE and presentation of neuropsy chiatric symptoms varied from 24 days up to 13 years. In two patients, the psychiatric ymptoms were caused by the side effects of steroid therapy, while the other 18 by CNS involvement. Manifestations of neuropsychiatric syndrome were multiple. The most frequent manifestations were psychosis, depression, hallucination and seizures, and dementia or coma in more severe cases. There were 7 deaths, the mortality being 35%.
