Abstract: Lupus nephritis is a major complication of systemic lupus erythematosus with high rate of morbidity and mortality, and which is charactered by large number of pathogenic autoantibodies. However, the question of how pathogenic autoantibodies contribute to renal damage is unresolved. Here, we review the evidence that the production of anti-DNA antibodies and the formation of glomerular immune deposits are important events in the pathogenesis of the disease.
