Abstract: By using cytochemical method with fluorescent estrogen conjugate, the scalp biopsies of thirteen cases of alopecia areata and four normal men were examined. Specific and variable intense staining in the epidermis, hair follicles and sebaceous glands both in alopeeia areata and in normal then were shown. In the stratum granulosum and the out root sheath of follicles, more positive staining cells were observed in scalp lesions of aloperaa areata patients than in normal scalp, the difference is statistically significant. The pathogenesis of alopecia areata was discussed.
