Abstract: This paper reports an analysis of the out-come of 60 pregnancies in 24 patients with SLE. According to the authors' records, pregnancies and deliveries have a bad effect on the course of SLE by inducing activation or exacerbation of the disease in 58% of the patients studied, and on the other hand, SLE also exerts a bad effect upon the outcome of pregnancies, resulting in a fetal wastage rate of 48.3%. The authors feel that patients with SLE must be very cautious about being pregnant. The SLE patients in active stage or with overt renal impairment should strictly avoid pregnancy. The pregnant SLE patients should be followed regularly by specialists, and adequate treatment should be given when apparent activation or exacerbation is present, corticosteroid therapy and therapeutic abortion may be considered when necessary.
