The prevalence of sensitive skin varies with age, gender, body sites, as well as race. The quality of life is substantially reduced in subjects with sensitive skin. Due to uncertainty of etiology, it has been a challenge to effectively manage sensitive skin. Recent studies have demonstrated pathogenic roles of epidermal permeability barrier and transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) in the development of sensitive skin. Therefore, improvement in epidermal permeability barrier function and utilization of TRPV1 inhibitors may be valuable approaches to the management of sensitive skin.
